On February 21st, 2009 Troop 145 went snow camping at Mt. Pinos. It was an experience to say the least. It was a new moon weekend and since Mt. Pinos is a gathering place for amateur astronomers, Mr. Trotta told the boys we could plan on getting some viewing in through some amazing equipment.
We arrived around 10AM on the 21st. After hauling our equipment to camp and setting up, the boys mad grilled cheese sandwiches for lunch then went off to play in the snow. One of the leaders brought a toboggan so they took turns riding on that. Afterwords the built snow forts and had a snowball fight.
The clouds had come in during the day but the weather report said nothing about a storm. It looked like the astronomy was out though.
After the boys cooked dinner, hot dogs, we gathered around the fire to warm up. It stated to snow around 7PM and turned to a mix about 8PM and the wind started blowing so we called it a night. The wind and rain lasted all night, nothing was dry the next morning, so much for weather reports. We had a quick breakfast and headed home.
The boys still talk about this trip, but so far no plans have been made for another. We'll see how long before the memory fade and they want to go again.
